Demographics

According to the 2000 Census, the City of Garland ranks 10th in population in Texas and 82nd in the country. Each year the Planning Department updates the population estimate based on building permit data and changes to occupancy rates and household size. The Annual Housing and Population Summary provides a snapshot of the number of housing units and estimated population located within the City of Garland by census tract. The January 1, 2009 estimated population for the City of Garland is 225,865 persons.

Much of Garland's population growth occurred during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and has slowed as Garland approaches buildout, which is anticipated to occur around 2012. Despite the slowing population growth, Garland grew 19.3 percent between the 1990 and 2000 Census, which ranks it at 65th place in percent change in population among cities with 100,000 or more. The reported 1999 median household income of the City of Garland is $49,156. A summary of the race and ethnicity characteristics for the Garland population is provided in the following table.
